A broken industrial pipe could lead to several disruptions. If it’s providing water to a whole community, for instance, then that village will go for days without being able to take a bath, water their plants, or clean their houses.
So, if the industrial piping in your facility in Utah is close to breaking, you should know how to keep it from breaking completely. Here are ways to keep your pipes from bursting.
Pipe Restraining
To prevent pipes from bursting, the best thing to do is to restrain them. Water flow tends to get stronger in corners or the end caps. This is why 45, 90 and end caps should be restrained properly.
But, even when you restrain your pipes, there’s no guarantee that it will be properly protected. Pipes are laid out underneath the ground, and constant shifting of the earth below can cause the pipes to crack.
Shock Absorbers
Due to the shifting ground underneath, pipes are susceptible to cracking. Often, it’s the connections between pipes that get dislocated or broken by the shifting ground. Also, the most common cause for the ground to shift is the change in temperature.
When winter comes, the water underneath the ground freezes. When it thaws in the spring, it shifts the ground about. When this happens, the force of the shifting ground can cause the pipes to break.
You should install repair couplings that are designed for angular deflection to allow for adjustments. You should also use repair couplings that are designed for dynamic deflection so that it will serve as a buffer for any ground movement.
Freezing Prevention
Cold temperatures could also wreak havoc on your pipes. Cold temperatures can shift the ground when the ice thaws and sometimes, break the pipe itself because when an object freezes, it becomes brittle.
In order to protect your pipes from breakage, you should know what to do when the climate is too cold and your pipes are exposed to it. Check your pipes to see if there are any cracks occurring already due to the frost. You should be meticulous about your check-up because the hardest-to-reach portions of your pipe can easily be affected by the cold temperature.
Once you’ve checked all of the portions of your pipe system, figure out which ones are the most susceptible to the cold. Once you’ve done this, install a space heater in those areas to prevent those parts from freezing.
You should also protect your sprinklers because they’re the ones that are very susceptible to breaking when the temperature is too cold. Sprinklers carry water throughout a facility. When the temperature drops, the water inside those pipes can easily freeze and breakthrough.
Prevent this from happening by making sure that your water sprinklers are well insulated. And as mentioned above, use space heaters to warm up portions of your water sprinkler system.
A well-maintained pipe system will ensure that your facility will work efficiently. Take care of your pipes, make sure that they don’t break, and you’ll be able to operate your factory or business without any disruptions.
